Meet Me in Montauk

I'll never forget that line from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which Kate Winslet whispers to Jim Carrey as the house they're in crumbles around them while the last of their memories of each other are erased (kind of a strange plot line when you think about it, no?). When I first saw the film, I'm not even sure I knew where Montauk was, and until a few weeks ago I'd never made the trip.
A friend of mine and I had been dying to get out of the city for a while to clear our heads and slow down, so when a beautiful Saturday where neither of us had plans presented itself late last month, I proposed several ideas ranging from a picnic in the park to a day at the botanical gardens to a trip to the coast—and was excited when she texted back "Montauk!!" minutes later. Since this was entirely last minute and we both had plans Sunday, we opted to just make a day out of it, meeting at Penn Station around 9:30 for the 3+ hour train ride out in the morning.

Once we got there, we really had no idea what to do, neither of us having come that far before (my previous Hamptons trips had only gotten me as far as East Hampton), so we hopped in a cab and asked him to take us "downtown," which was all of a few minutes' drive south and much smaller than what I'd anticipated from other visits! Most of the Hamptons towns are lined with a mix of basic shops and high-end boutiques, but the little strip of Montauk was a downsized version—in a good way. We wandered a little bit, stopped in to the visitor center to ask about bike rentals and finally settled on 668 The Gigshack, which I can't recommend highly enough if you're ever out that way. We were seated outside and both had the local fresh fish tacos topped with mango salsa (sorry, no pics because we ate them too fast! #storyofmylife). I'm normally a vegetarian but was pescetarian for a very long time and make the very occasional exception—this one was so worth it.
After we'd lounged a while at lunch, relishing the feeling of not being rushed unlike in Manhattan, we realized it had gotten ridiculous warm out and a sudden desire to go swimming in the ocean struck us both. We hadn't brought suits so we popped in a few shops to see about finding cheap ones to no avail, then walked over to the beach to check it out (in downtown Montauk, it's about two blocks from the "center" of town!) and it was PACKED. Like, we would have had trouble finding somewhere to even sit kind of packed. We turned around and headed over to the bike rental shop, figuring we'd cruise around town and try to make it out to the semi-infamous Montauk Point Lighthouse (which I somehow don't have a photo of here), a *mere* five miles down the road.

My friend was drawn immediately to this big, shiny yellow city cruiser bike. For those who aren't familiar with a city cruiser, they tend to be really nice to look at and bike around a small town like Montauk, not so great for longer treks and especially not if there are hills. We asked the guy at the rental shop if the ride out to the lighthouse was easy and he said it was a straight shot, so we decided to go for it since we still had just over three hours to sundown and the ride was supposed to be 25-30 minutes. I know—that sounds like a lot, and for the first 15 or 20 minutes it wasn't so bad (with beautiful views and lots of nature), til we hit the hills. Plural. Three nice big up-and-down hills just before you hit the end of the island. Suffice to say, my thighs were screaming at me for about two days straight afterwards and felt like jell-o at the end. Since the lighthouse was closing not long after we arrived and we had cumbersome bikes with us, we walked down a short path to the water and, oh, was the ride worth it. Bright, royal blue water as far as the eye could see, dotted with pretty white boats and the most beautiful warm sunshine.
We left the lighthouse and beach about an hour before the sun officially set, since neither of us relished the idea of biking five miles on city cruisers in near darkness on the Montauk Highway. Our timing couldn't have been better—we dropped the bikes off, wandered back down the street and into a fudge shop for old-fashioned sweets, and had about thirty minutes to kill til we had to be at the train station, so we moseyed down to the beach one more time to the below view.
As we stood there (and I snapped away on my camera, both of the sunset and my friend in silhouette there) the colors got more and more rich, the moon a sliver of a bright spot in the sky. We couldn't have asked for a better way to end what turned out to be a truly amazing day, and we were so inspired that we planned a trip that we took this past weekend to East Hampton—more on that to come!

And, just for fun (and in the spirit of other recent posts), a few outtakes from this trip. Exhibit A: what happens when I try to jump in the air while standing somewhat precariously on a rock, surround by water and other sharp rocks…according to my friend, I was "levitating." Can I put that as a skill on my resumé?
Exhibit B: This is my "Look, our friends with boats!" gesture, part of a longstanding inside joke about how we'll know we've made it in NYC when we have friends with boats we can go out on.

Bet On It

Earlier this summer, the crew over at America's Best Racing reached out to see if I'd be interested in learning more about horse racing and attending an event in the New York area. I grew up around horses—my mom saved her money to buy her first horse instead of a car when she was 15—and had seen a handful of races at a small track back home, but nothing on the scale that the tracks in New York can offer.
Since a day at the races means wearing a fun sundress and a big floppy hat, I couldn't say no! I also love a good reason to get out of the city and visit somewhere new, so since The America's Best Racing team has been in Saratoga all month for the last races of the season, a few other bloggers, racing lovers and myself hopped on a (very unexpected party) bus at the crack of dawn for the ride up north.
It was a little cloudier than expected and stopped my photos from turning out quite as I'd hoped (not sure if I've mentioned it before but my dSLR is about a decade old! I bought it when I first started studying photography), but the upside was I didn't have to worry too much about a sunburn, although I did put on SPF 50+  before I left my apartment because that video over on Time is scary as f*ck. We wandered around the grounds, sipping cocktails from Buffalo Trace (because what's a horse race without some bourbon?), taking in the older buildings and impressive track and even getting up close with some of the really crazy hats horses in the paddocks. There are still a few weeks left of races and if I wasn't heading back to Iowa for a while tomorrow, I'd be making a trip back up for another day (the beautiful views on the drive up don't hurt, either). Also, because I finally bet on a horse and won more than $.10, unlike my last experience at the racetrack.

Holiday Sparkle

After several days of no Internet, I'm back! If you follow me on Twitter, you know I left NYC on Thursday evening to head back home with my family for two weeks. I got in late Thursday...to discover that there was no Internet at my parents' place. Normally, I'd enjoy the break from technology, but when there's work to do, blog posts to write and TV shows to watch (current binge: The Wire), it's a little bit disconcerting, to say the least.

Anyways, I mentioned before that I attended a few holiday parties while I was in NYC, and to me the holidays aren't complete without a little sparkle (blame it on the dancer in me—I grew up around a lot of glitter and sequins). I always hit up the Parker sample sale each season, which used to be downright dangerous when I worked in the same building. They have the most amazing silk beaded pieces, and always at a steal even when they're full price (hand beaded silk can be disgustingly expensive!). During the spring sale, I found this turquoise beaded jacket hiding in the racks between party dresses and silk prints, and I knew I had to have it. After a warm, dressed-down summer, I finally have a chance to put it to good use for a friend's dressier holiday celebration! Thankfully, it was warm enough in NYC for me to snap pics of the look before I left, too.

Dream Home: Upstate Retreat

This house may be my favorite find (domestically, after last week's international house in Santorini) to date! It's in upstate New York and I could not think of a better place to retreat when you need to get away from the city for a little while. Nature is the one thing I miss more than most anything else about living here. I grew up with a tree and garden filled acre for a back yard, surrounded by woods, and spent more time outside than in as a child. Huge windows, recessed lighting and beautiful landscaping make this house once place I wouldn't want to leave!

Aftermath & Recovery, Part 1

This post is going to be a little dull and depressing, but hey, it's what's going on in my life right now.

I spent the last 2.5 days stuck in my apartment, with the worst of the storm hitting us around 8pm last night. We'd been listening to wind whip around for several hours, although we never had pouring rains. Our lights started flickering during my cookie baking adventures, but we seemed to be doing okay. About halfway through cookie baking, I heard a loud noise and looked out the window. The (already dead but still standing) tree right outside my kitchen window had fallen over in a huge gust of wind. At the same time, my roommate yelled from the front of our apartment.

The metal awning that had been attached maybe a foot below my bedroom window/above our front door had completely blown down in the same gust. As I was calling our super, our downstairs neighbor knocked & the awning blew up against our front gate-as evidenced below.

We got everything secure and thankfully made it through without much other damage, although we lost cable & Internet for a while and had several more bouts of flickering lights. A power line also snapped about half a block up after glowing bright orange and sparking for several minutes.

Thankfully, this was the most excitement we had to deal with although I have many friends who were evacuated or dealt with flooding in their neighborhoods. I ventured out today and saw that a lot of trees around us not just splintered but were completely uprooted, several on top of houses or blocking entire streets. NYC isn't made to hold up under weather like this. I still can't get out of Queens, or even really my neighborhood, but life is slowly continuing.

Blank Canvas T-Shirt

Yesterday, Jessica (of Bows and Sequins) and I took our first road, well, train trip, really, to upstate New York! We met up at Grand Central in the morning (checking "take a train from Grand Central" off the bucket list now) and took a beautiful 2 hour ride up the Hudson to Poughkeepsie to see the Walkway Over the Hudson after I read about it in Time Out New York's list of musts for Fall! (You can view the entire 101 item list here.) Unfortunately, we were probably a week before the leaves hit their peak but it was still a fun day! I'll be doing a separate post about the trip and the town this week.

Some of my favorite things are making their appearances here, like my white v-necks (I own about 10 of this exact shirt!), Butter London nail polish, and my acrylic Iowa pendant-gotta represent!!
