10 Questions for: Briar Winters of Marble & Milkweed

Kicking off a new series (of sorts—we'll see how often I can pull it together!) on the blog with this post. One of my reasons for starting a blog was because I wanted somewhere to catalog things. An online diary, of sorts, from what's going on in my head and my life to the way my style is evolving, while also acting as a shopping wish list and place to share new products and companies—which brings us full circle back to today's post, on local organic & analog apothecary Marble & Milkweed.
I've been trying to simplify in life this year, from gutting my wardrobe (swapping college clothes for adult ones has started a never-ending donation pile in my apartment) to eating cleaner and healthier (more on that another time), which has most recently stretched to re-evaluating my beauty and skincare routine. While I'm an admitted product junkie who likes trying new brands, I'm actually pretty loyal to the majority of my beauty products and brands—just like you are, I'm sure!

There's been a wealth of reports in recent years about the ingredients in beauty products that are unhealthy for your skin, and while some of the claims may be over-exaggerated, there's definitely no harm to putting natural products on your skin. Once I started this search, I stumbled across Marble & Milkweed, an apothecary studio based in TriBeCa that hand-makes disarmingly simple skincare products, using organic and fair-trade ingredients. Founder Briar Winters was kind enough to let me drop by her studio to shoot some photos and asker a few questions! Read on for ten questions with Briar,  from how she got started to her favorite ingredients and how to incorporate natural skincare into your current routine. You can check out her online shop here, and her products are also available on Etsy! Some products change seasonally based on ingredients that are good for the weather and readily available. I'm a huge fan of the Cardamom lip balm (get the tube instead of a tin), and just ordered a facial serum and cardamom butter this week.
What inspired you to start Marble & Milkweed?
After years of working in pastry kitchens here in New York City, I felt ready to begin exploring some of my favorite flavor and scent combinations from a new perspective. There’s a real kinship between the apothecary and the kitchen, and much of my work with Marble & Milkweed is informed by my culinary training, especially the intense focus on beautiful, pure raw materials.

Have you always been interested in natural and organic products?
I grew up in rural Washington State, playing outside and having a small garden of my own there. These early experiences have absolutely inspired a continuing desire to live in harmony with nature. When I moved out on my own and began to make more of my own purchasing decisions, I began to educate myself about the provenance of the foods and products that I bought and used. I began to feel uncomfortable with many of the industrial ingredients used in my skincare and household products, so I began researching other options. Eventually, I started creating all of my own products from the highest quality food-grade ingredients.
When you first started making skincare products, did you follow recipes you’d already found or was there a lot of experimenting until you found things that worked?
I did so much research when I first began getting interested in crafting skincare, on everything from clays and botanical essences to cold-pressed oils, and I began experimenting from scratch. I’ve also found a lot of inspiration in ancient skincare traditions and rituals, including those of Ayurveda. I knew what I wanted my products to feel and smell like, and I began from there, allowing myself to be guided by the innate qualities of each ingredient.

What product would you recommend to start with to someone who’s just discovered your line and isn’t using a lot of natural or organic skincare products yet?
I would begin with one of the serums. They showcase the incredible healing power of botanical oils in their purest form, and they absorb easily into the skin. A few drops after cleansing and before bed will completely change the way your skin feels in the morning. Coming of age, the conventional wisdom said that using oils was bad for oily skin, but now that I understand more about the different types of oils and the way our skin works, the balancing effect of a well-crafted facial oil seems inevitable. Cold-pressed oils are full of nutrients and help protect skin in such a deep way, while the scents of the botanical essences soothe the spirit.
Marble & Milkweed represents more than just a desire to take care of your skin, you also promote environmental consciousness with reusable/recyclable packaging and minimal ingredients. Is this something you’ve always been passionate about, or have you grown more aware yourself year after year?
Both - it’s something that has long been a priority of mine, but I continue to educate myself about how I can do more. Washington State has had comprehensive municipal recycling programs for much longer than New York City, and so I grew up sorting things carefully, and developing an awareness of our impact on the earth. After learning about the irreversible environmental damage our overuse of plastic causes, I felt inspired to avoid it as much as possible. The deeper I get into my work, the more connected I feel to the natural world and that’s something that I hope to share with my customers through the conscious choices that I have the opportunity to make when it comes to philosophy, packaging and ingredients.
You’re running a small and successful company on your own. Tell me what a typical day looks like at the Marble & Milkweed studio.
I’m not a very early riser, probably thanks to many years of working dinner service hours in the pastry kitchen. My partner, Michael, still works nights in the kitchen, so I feel fortunate to have the freedom to dovetail my schedule with his to give us quiet mornings together. It takes me about 20 minutes to get to my studio in TriBeCa from our home on the Lower East Side. Each day at the studio is different, depending on what must be done. Some days are reserved just for packing and shipping orders, and quieter days are spent crafting products. I’m lucky to have a post office with late hours just nearby, and trips there are a nice way to stretch my legs during the day. I often work quite late into the evenings, and I try to always leave the studio as orderly as possible, so that the next day begins smoothly. Somewhere between all of that, of course, lies ordering and sourcing supplies, bookkeeping and administrative duties, and keeping up with my social media accounts. I love doing it all myself, it gives me the chance to create exactly the situation I want across every area of my work.

Tell me a little bit about your creation process. What inspires you to make a new product? What’s the testing process look like?
The seasons and their corresponding raw materials are my main source of inspiration. The sensibilities and needs of our skin change throughout the year, so it makes sense to look toward the cycles of the natural world as muse.
What’s one of the trickiest things you’ve found about owning and running your own business? The most rewarding?
Balancing all of the different facets of something that often feels like its own being can be a challenge. It’s impossible to be very good at all of it, but it’s important to me to get good enough at the business side of things to support the creative side. And to know when to ask for help. It has been a wonderful learning experience. The most rewarding part is helping my clients discover the endless potential for beauty and harmony in the relationship between skin, spirit, and the natural world.

What are your favorite ingredients to work with? Do they change each season?

Some of my favorites in every season include rose, cardamom, sandalwood and chamomile, as well as so many others. As winter approaches, I begin to focus on the coniferous oils and essences, as well as the richest of the nourishing cold-pressed oils, which are perfect for protecting the skin as the weather becomes cold and dry. Focusing on the gifts of each season helps to give us a sense of place, and grounds us in the moment.
What are your long-term plans for Marble & Milkweed?
Marble & Milkweed has evolved very organically from the beginning, and I intend to allow that to continue. More seasonal offerings are always on the way, as well as collaborations with a few carefully selected local farmers in sourcing raw materials. I’m also currently learning the ancient art of distillation in order to more deeply understand the process of creating hydrosols, with the hope of eventually distilling my own from locally sourced botanicals.

Warm Weather Beauty

I know I'm not the only one who equates spring/summer weather with all kinds of lighter layers—both in clothing and in beauty! I like to shed a lot of my makeup when it's warmer and opt for just a few layers of skincare—moisturizer, sunscreen, and a sheer tint, topped off with a bright lip and a hint of a cat-eye.
If you're irked that all the images I've gathered for my beauty moodboard are blondes, well, hey—I go with what I know! I've always been a blonde but in the summer sun my hair really bleaches out. It takes a lot longer now that I work a desk job and not at a pool (insert nostalgic sighs for summers past here), but I definitely get a white-ish blonde layer on top and I fully expect this summer to be no exception. I'm already prone to letting my hair keep the mind of its own that's developed, but in the summer I really let it go and opt for braids, beach-y waves and tousled tresses as much as possible. Even if I won't be spending this summer on any other beaches than New York's, I'd like to pretend I can fool passer-by into thinking I just got back from a Mexico vacay.
So, tell me—how do you simplify your routine for warm weather?

Polished

Confession time: I am a self-professed nail polish junkie. Double confession? I used to be a terrible, horrible, awful nail-biter. One day somewhere in the middle of college, I suddenly stopped cold turkey. A miracle, really, since it's a known fact I have zero willpower. I also found the nicer and more colorful I kept my nails, the less tempted I was to pick at them, and soon a small collection of a dozen or so blah bottles became 30, 40, 50 bottles of resplendent color to satisfy whatever mood I might want to convey with a wave of my hand.
Several summers lifeguarding at my local pool were spent changing colors on breaks with the other girls. More often than not I went up on the stand with one hand painted, the other to be finished later, and too much time like this on all the female guards' hands (pun aside) resulted in a color change every couple of days, along with the added bonus of near-impeccable application skills, which saves me more money than I want to think about on manicures each year.
I don't have nearly so much free time on—or, more accurately for—my hands these days, but when Sally Hansen reached out to see if I wanted to try their Triple Shine polish, I immediately removed my chipping mani and went straight for the blue (duh).
My polish gets changed most often on the weekends or occasionally right before bed. My trick for no smudges at night: I lock my hands together, as though I'm holding my own, as I drift off. I don't move around a whole lot so it usually has a chance to completely dry before I inevitably shift! If I'm not in a rush on weekend mornings, I like to get up, make coffee and eat breakfast (not pictured: French toast to covered in some more berries), catch up on the hundreds of magazines I seem to always have laying around and put on a fresh coat of polish.
Most beauty products claim to have some great aspect to them that others don't, but I always find it's not often enough they can really stand up to the claim. I was ready to layer on a super-shiny topcoat after applying my usual two coats, but stopped for a minute to admire the actual shine this polish really does have. I switched to pink (pictured above) this past weekend and even as I type three days later my nails are still gleaming! Of course, I went ahead with top coat, but only because I'm incredibly hard on my nails, although I'm still looking at minimal chips right now.

Triple Shine comes in 29 different shades of solid, iridescent and glitter-y polish, all available wherever Sally Hansen is sold. Join the conversation on instagram & Twitter by hashtagging #ShineOn #TripleShine or #TurnUpTheShine (and, take a minute to get inspired by some of the incredibly cool self-done nail artists out there...thinking about taking my skills a step further & trying to replicate the Bowery Mural, below, somehow.
I do have all the right shades...)

Be Bold

Lip Color (noun): a disguise for lazy days; an easy way to look put together

I've never been one to shy away from bold beauty trends (Kool-Aid hair dye, anyone?). During my teen years, colorful eyeliner was my expressive makeup of choice. Not only were eye pencils pretty affordable—there were a lot of great options at my local drugstores for as little as $.99—they were highly pigmented and felt a little rebellious. I was frequently known to wear as many as three colors blended together at once, but I rarely ventured into lip color outside of the occasional candy-colored (& often similarly-scented) gloss. College brought out the "adult" in me, intermittently experimenting with a bubblegum pink or bright red lipstick, usually for a party or Greek life function (also known as more parties).

Starting a job in the "real world" brought another shift, once I realized lip color is an easy addition in the morning to make me look more put together, as opposed to reserved for dress-up functions only. I've since toned down my eyeliner game quite a bit; lip color is a lot easier to wipe off before you sweat it out at the gym than eye makeup (hello, raccoon eyes!).
My latest lip crush is the Lip Elixir line from Maybelline. They're highly pigmented and come in tubes that look like a lipstick, but they're actually a gloss! I'm usually pretty hesitant about glosses and opt for a matte lip color instead, but in the winter it's just too damn dry for anything matte! These glosses pack a surprising amount of moisture that doesn't dry out or fade—I often re-apply lip color several times a day, but I only find myself reaching for another coat once or twice a day with these babies. I just might be a lip-gloss convert.

#TBT to my teenage years, right?

Weekend Casual + Inside My Bag

The weather in NYC has been beyond perfect over the last week or so, with warm, breezy temps during the day-but you can feel that touch of coolness on the underside of the air, whispering that fall is coming. While I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of fall (not helped by the fact that winter follows), I do love the crisp feeling in the air slowly ushered in by the change of season. Since we're still a bit off from sweater weather, though, I took full advantage of the weekend weather with a brunch date and a day in Central Park basking in the warm afternoon sunshine-and playing around with my film camera, which is making a reappearance in my life.

The people at Hobo International were kind enough to send over this Mariella bag, which is the perfect size to carry all my essentials for a day in the city. I'm also linking up with four other bloggers-Jessica, Laura, Lydia and Fran-to show you what those essentials are! Scroll down for a peek inside my bag.
Tee, Joana Avillez for Refinery29 || Pants, H&M (thanks, Jessica!) || Bag, Hobo Bags c/o
Sunglasses, Ray-Ban || Sandals, Kelsi Dagger (on sale!)
The great thing about the Mariella is it helps me to be a little bit more organized-if I'm carrying a tote, I just toss everything in, which can leave me digging for my keys in the dark (story of my life most nights!). I never leave home without my wallet, keys & phone, and during the day I usually toss in my planner (I know, I'm a nerd for still carrying one!), a notebook (Muji's are cheap and easy to carry) to jot down blog ideas and keep track of finances and other essentials, and a good book to read for the subway ride home. The Mariella fits my style perfectly, with a shoulder strap to keep me hands free when I'm lugging bags through the city and plenty of storage for the rest of my essentials.
I'm all over the place when it comes to beauty products, but I have a handful of essentials I can't leave home without. I've been carrying C. O. Bigelow's Rose Salve daily for almost ten years (!) and have been known to leave tins all over the place, from work to home to my parents' house, in case I need a quick fix-I kept so many at my college boyfriend's that he started buying them for me. I'm pretty minimal in my daily makeup routine, but I'm a huge fan of lip color and a little flush to the cheeks, so I keep a few options on hand for touch-ups. Having long hair requires some type of hair management on hand at all times, and a nail file is a must (these ones are $1 for a pack of three-I keep one tucked in my wallet and at my desk at work, too). All the little things tuck up nicely into a leather pouch so I'm not scrambling for them when I really need them!

Weekend Detox

With the last dregs of winter weather finally, finally leaving NYC & a packed, fun summer ahead of me, I thought I'd take advantage of the rainy weekend and do a little detoxing inside & out. I'll be headed to Mexico in less than a month and I want my skin to look & feel its best! I kicked off my morning with some cleaning around my apartment on Sunday, opting for lemon water instead of coffee to help flush the toxins out of my body (still unsure about lemon water? Here's eight reasons why you should start drinking it, stat), followed by a long shower and some of my go-to beauty products!

Before hopping in the shower, I slipped on some Crest Whitestrips for about 10 minutes-any longer, and they make my teeth too sensitive, but I use them once or twice a month to keep my smile bright! I'm currently going about a week in between hair washes, but I did a deep exfoliation of my skin with one of my favorite scrubs (that conveniently smells like a margarita). A little bit of Kate Somerville's Exfolikate on my Clarisonic Mia 2 helped me ditch dull, dry skin, followed up with my favorite mask and facial serum post-shower. To keep my hair healthy in between washes, I've been rubbing a little Orofluido into the ends a couple times a week and combing out the tangles with a wide tooth comb. Orofluido is, hands down, one of my best beauty finds of the year so far! Lastly, I used my latest addiction, coconut oil. I warm a little up in a bowl and rub it into my skin to give it some much-needed TLC.

What do you do when you need a beauty detox?

Tata Harper Skincare

Last week, I was lucky enough to attend a master class for the skincare line Tata Harper at one of my favorite NYC stores, ABC Home, led by founder Tata herself. I hadn't tried any of her products but had heard some pretty rave reviews, plus the story behind the company & their all-natural ingredients meant it was a past due introduction.

The class was small and lasted about an hour, which was the perfect amount of time to try nearly every product in her line. She also announced three new serums that will be launching throughout the year. Harper's line currently has a variety of products including cleansers, moisturizes, serums and special treatments, each one with anywhere from one to two dozen-plus active ingredients.

Tata shared her personal tips and tricks for getting the most out of each product and gave recommendations on what would be better for each person's skin, based on their concerns. We started with each of her cleansers; one, a more gentle formula for sensitive skin (definitely more my type) and the other a scrub made from pink clay and apricot seed kernels that Tata said can be used weekly with a Clarisonic to truly exfoliate; both cleansers are soap-free and don't require water to get going. After that, we tried one of my favorite products, the resurfacing mask, which goes on clear-no scary looking white formula on your skin!-and is great for acne and other dark spots.

A few of the other things we tried included her rejuvenating serum and hydrating floral essence, which she recommends mixing together and applying at the same time, replenishing nutrient complex, both the reparative and rebuilding moisturizers and her aromatic mood treatments, which were formulated as an added bonus to the skincare products. All of her products are scented naturally with floral extracts, making them smell amazing even though their ingredients were chosen based on their benefits, not scent. We also sampled the revitalizing body oil, which came home with me in a full-size bottle that I've been using all week!

Her products are a little more expensive than what I would normally spend, but based on the results I saw immediately following even one application, it's more than worth it! Our skin is one of the most important & oft forgotten things we need to take care of, inside and out. Over time, I'm hoping to incorporate more of her products into regular rotation, especially once some of my more recent skincare purchases run out. If you're interested in trying out the line, I've rounded up a few of my favorites below:

Also, in case you're wondering (and you should be), Tata Harper is currently working on a sunscreen & protectant, so keep an eye out for an announcement on that front! If you want to learn more, visit her site at www.tataharperskincare.com or ask me a question, I'd love to try to answer it from my experiences or the notes I took during the class.

Two-tone Lips

For my job, I spend a lot of time searching the web for current trends in the fashion industry. Every now and again, I come across a real gem-and this is one I had to share. Holly Fulton, who shows at London Fashion Week, had the best makeup I've seen on any runway for Spring/Summer 2013. Some days, I just can't decide if I want to go bright pink or bold coral on my lips...now I'll be tempted to do them both at the same time!

Prep your lips with a sugar scrub before applying intense color. I like Fresh Sugar Lip Polish. Follow up with a clear balm to lock in moisture, then apply your first layer-in this case, the pink! Make sure you have an even, blended coat as this is your base. Next, put a little of your orange on a lip brush and apply it to the center of your lips, blending outwards as you go. You can also use your fingers. Et voilĂ !

Is this a trend you would try? Sound off below!

Beauty Must-Haves

I don't wear a lot of makeup on a day to day basis, but anyone who knows me is aware of my affinity for Sephora, and even more so of my love for nail polish...but more on that later! I put together some of my favorite products from my favorite beauty store, starting with skin care. Taking care of your skin should always be the first step to looking your best (and this really starts with drinking plenty of water).

I tend to try different brands all the time when I need a new product, but I've been loyally using Perricone MD Hypoallergenic Gentle Cleanser for three years now. I have very sensitive skin (I've had eczema since I was 12) and this gets all my makeup off in one go without irritating my skin. I received a sample of this Murad Clarifying Mask last year and I loved it so much, I bought the full size tube. I can very literally see a difference in my skin every time I rinse it off. Last on my musts for skincare-sunscreen!!! I spent seven years as a full-time outdoor lifeguard in the summer and I've seen every shade of bad sunburn there is, so I'm pretty adamant about getting proper sun protection. I've switched brands a few times and have finally settled on this Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection for Face SPF 55 PA+++. The higher price is worth it because I can put this on the the morning, let it absorb and put makeup on top within five minutes without any greasy residue & it has a great, light scent. I always make sure to cover my entire face, neck and rub the extra in my hands, even in the winter!

I switch blush back and forth between NARS Blush in Orgasm (a must-have classic) and Urban Decay Afterglow Cheek Tint in Quickie, which I received as a sample through Sephora before purchasing. Both blend like a dream and give the perfect flush, every time.

I don't actually own the Urban Decay Naked Palette yet but I've used a friend's before and I'm DYING to get my hands on one! It's got every shade you need for day or night, any outfit. They also make a great Shadow Pencil, which I run under my eyes or along my top lashes in Delinquent to bring out the green in them. I'm also a fan of Clinique High Impact Mascara, which gives me easy volume and length without clumping quickly.

Lastly, my favorite parts about my makeup routine! As I'm sure you've guessed by now, I'm a huge fan of color in all areas of my style. I change my nails every few days, & this Sephora by OPI in Screen Test is one of my latest picks for a pop of color. If you remember from my post about OCC Lip Tar, I've decided to make a bright pink lip my "thing," & this YSL Sheer Candy Gloss in Succulent Pomegranate is a quick way to add a sheer, bright lip. My other go-to is this NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Carthage, which I wear pretty regularly. I love their matte lipsticks-I have a few other colors, but this one definitely makes it out of my beauty drawer most.

What are your go-to beauty products? (I'm always on the lookout for something new to try!)
