Do This, Go There, Eat That

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how fast summer is going. It feels like it just started yet we're somehow nearly halfway through (thanks, never-ending polar vortex). Usually, I can enjoy the slow tapering out of summer before I realize the colder temps are really upon us, but this year I'm on a deadline with a long trip home followed by the start of fashion week about 36 hours after I return, and before I can even wrap my head around it, it'll be the end of September. So, in the spirit of not losing sight of the rest of summer—and what a wonderful one it's been so far—and partly inspired by Jessica's Summer Bucket List, I decided to pull together a few things I want to do while the mercury's still hot, before I become a hermit in the winter.
This one is high on my list—because when you come across instagram images of popsicles in prosecco, it's like an unspoken commandment that you find them and consume one of each flavor. Coupled with the fact they're served at a rooftop bar (at the Conrad Hotel in Battery Park), it checks two things off my summer to-do list—booze soaked popsicles and a bar with a view. I actually had plans to go a few weeks back but, as has been the case lately, a nasty storm rolled in just as I was leaving work and we ended up at a speakeasy with no windows instead. There's still plenty of time to go back, and Loopy Doopy has partnered with People's Pops out of Brooklyn to rotate the flavors every month this summer!

Union Square Greenmarket (image)

I grew up with one of the best farmers' markets (#2 on that list!), making the one here have to do a little work to fall into favor with me. While the selection of produce at the Union Square one isn't quite as gigantic as what I can find back home and is severely lacking in sweet corn come fall, it's definitely grown on me over the last few years. The market is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday each week, but until recently I'd only ever gone on Saturdays when it's usually jam-packed with people and picked over (just like the one back home, but we would get up and go at about 6:30a when we wanted the good stuff). I happened to walk through while it was nearly empty this past Friday on the Fourth post-Soulcycle and got so distracted looking at the yummy produce that I went to the ATM so I could stock up on fresh produce and dairy for the week! It's not far from my office, so I'm planning to drop by during the week more often.
Alright, so this one is only sort of going to happen in the summer for me, but after another recent instagram discovery and the realization that it's barely an hour away on the Metro North, it's become a priority this year. The Glass House has a storied history, designed by Philip Johnson and used as a weekend retreat for himself and his partner, David Whitney, for nearly 60 years. There is an accompanying guest house entirely in brick with just three windows and a skylight; the 49-acre grounds also hold various other structures including a painting gallery and sculpture gallery. This year they're also featuring an installation by artist Fujiko Nakaya, pictured above, surrounding the house in a swirling, surreal fog. It runs through November and there are different kinds of tours available on different days (see the full schedule here); the Metro North train station is right across the street so transportation from the city is easy!

Jones Beach (image by Rose Mayo)

One of the reasons I moved to a coast was to be as near to an ocean as possible, even if that ocean is too cold for me to do so much as put my toes in the water eight months of the year. But, I think if I loved water any more than I do now, I'd be fish instead of human. There's something about the crashing of the waves that soothes my soul, and diving through the (out here at best, lukewarm) water quiets my mind like nothing else can. So far this summer, there's only been time—and weather—for one, but newfound summer Fridays means I'll be heading straight to the beach after work this week. While it's easiest to get to Rockaways via subway, I actually prefer Jones Beach out on Long Island. It's about an hour drive from Queens, which we easily made several times last year before my friend's car, affectionately known as the "beach mobile," gave out on us over the winter. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for cheap Zipcar days so we can make it back a few more times this year. It's much quieter and more spread out at Jones and you get to avoid the loud kids and visitors—any sort of activity without tourists always gets my vote.

Joseph Leonard (image via my instagram)

Saving the best for last...Joseph Leonard! Easily my favorite brunch spot in the entire city—it's intimate without being poorly lit or too small, near the West Village (which makes for great wandering post-brunch), across the street from a puppy store (which is a great place to kill time if you have a 30-45 minute wait) and the food and drinks are incredible. I've heard they do a killer dinner, too, but I've yet to actually make it there at night. I know, I said this was a list of things I wanted to do for summer and I've clearly visited many a time before, but it's been several months since my last visit and there's really no better way to spend a summer Sunday (unless you're at the beach, of course). My favorite things to order are a mini-French Press, a Magdalena (the drink pictured here), avocado toast with scrambled eggs, and occasionally a side of brussels sprouts!

Weekend Notes // Link Love

Kicking the week off in reverse with the link love post I didn't get to this weekend thanks to the extra-large glass of wine that became my dinner on Friday night. I know, priorities!

To recap the weekend in a few words: so. much. sun. Saturday started very bright and early with a 2-hour subway ride to a much needed beach day (the only thing I'll drop #SoulSurvivor for—sorry, Hallie & Jess!). Despite slathering my pale skin in SPF 70+ every hour, that sun devil burned through my defenses in a few patches, but I'm hoping coconut oil can pull off the usual miracle and keep me from peeling (you can scoop up my favorite brand here—I've been using it as body lotion, hair mask and lip balm for the past year). I capped off the night with a small dinner party on my back porch and rounded out my Sunday with brunch at an old favorite in the East Village with Emily. I also conveniently managed to accomplish absolutely nothing on my to-do list, but my summer priorities tend to go something like this: beach, sun, friends, drinks (especially margaritas), brunch.
#Sorrynotsorry, am I right?

Also on my radar:

Today's influencers give advice to 20-somethings. Definitely worth the read!

Investing in a much-needed beach blanket this summer.

I recently had a terrible experience with Megabus—the way they handled their customer service guaranteed I'll never use them again, so Breanna's post on burning bridges struck close to home!

My dream shoe is half off (but still a serious investment). Should I bite the bullet anyways?

Zara—where fashion insiders go for an edge (and you should, too!).

NARS satin lip pencils have become my go-to summer lip color thanks to their easy, rich color!

Has anyone tried the Marilyn hair mask from Lush? Thinking about picking it up to keep my locks bright this summer and would love to hear any reviews!

The perfect denim shorts for summer.

Stunning bathroom design over on Kate's blog.

On repeat. This, too.

This beautiful Suno dress is great for summer soirées—and it's on sale, too!

Chia Seed Oats/Pudding has become my go-to breakfast. Super easy to make! I layer mine with my mom's homemade preserves, granola and slivered almonds.

Rainy Weekends // Link Love

Mother Nature seems to have recognized that I needed a break this weekend—the temps are a little warmer but it's been gray and rainy off and on since Friday afternoon. Between having a friend in town for five days recently and my brother in town on Friday night, I was in desperate need of a reason many reasons not to leave my apartment. Yesterday was spent recharging my batteries on the couch with the many magazines that have been piling up around me and a glass—okay, fine, bottle—of wine at night (and yeah, I did spend some time watching "Too Cute" on Animal Planet. I'm a living, breathing cliché).

Lusting after this gorgeous signet ring from Ariel Gordon.

Warby Parker's new store is absolutely stunning—and I really appreciate that they left so much of the building's heritage intact.

Stunning photos of Bondi Beach that make me want it to be my next vacation.

Can't get over how pretty this Capwell + Co necklace is.

My 30's are still a few years away, but that doesn't mean I can't aim to excel at this list now.

Spring sneaker want: these floral Supra kicks #sneakerhead.

As a professed film photography addict, I love this beautiful post from Ann Street Studio on what has been becoming a lost art.

Then-and-Now photos of NYC that make me afraid what this city will look like in another 30 years. We do NOT need banks, Starbucks and Duane Reade on every. single. block.

Is it too early to buy new beach towels? These ones from Anthropologie are so pretty.

Snapshots from Mexico

You know that feeling when you get back from vacation, where you know it wasn't all that long ago but the miles between you and that place make it feel like an untouchable memory? Yeah, I'm feeling that right now. It's only been a week since my last full day on the beach but it's kind of feeling like a dream! In an attempt to stay steeped in the memories, I'm sharing a few snaps from my week with you here (wedding pictures & a little of what I wore to follow!).
Wearing: Pickwick & Weller tee | Shorts | J.C. Penney Aviators | Kate Spade bag
Those last few (before the iguana!) are from the ruins of Tulum and the beautiful, rocky beach there. While it was incredibly hot and humid the day we went, I tried to enjoy it as much as I could! It's astounding to think of the civilization that called the very land you were standing on home so many thousands of years ago. Despite thousands of tourists visiting each week, the beach stays pristine and breathtaking-I can only imagine its beauty back when the Mayans used it as a trading port. I'm not really sure what was going on in the photo second from bottom, other than that a man was sitting on top of that pole playing traditional music and they slowly started to drop down as the ropes unwound.

I've got a few more photos from my trip, including a peek at the beautiful bride my cousin made, but in my heart-until next time, Mexico!

Beach Bum

I am a self-proclaimed beach girl all the way, and somehow the last couple weekends have worked out in my favor! Over Memorial Day weekend, my mom & I headed out to Coney Island (which is at the complete opposite end of the subway line from where I live) to spend a few hours wandering the boardwalk and getting some sand in our toes. This weekend, a friend and I drove to Jones Beach on Saturday to soak up some sunshine (we both got sunburned, oops) and listen to the waves crash on the shore.

While we were there, I found out I would be headed to Southampton on Sunday! My company recently opened a store in the area for the season with an apartment set aside that was just begging to be used. I hopped on the jitney yesterday afternoon & got here just in time to meet up with Hallie and Jessica for a little while before they headed back to the city. Unfortunately, it's raining today, but it's supposed to die down by the afternoon & I'm seriously looking forward to a stroll on the beach and perusing some of the cute shops on the picturesque main streets. In the meantime, here's a couple snaps from my beach days the last few weeks.

Birthday Dreaming

I've never been one to make a fuss about my birthday with big celebrations, parties or much of a plan at all. I have been lucky enough to spend some birthdays in amazing locations like Chicago, Italy and Las Vegas (twice!), but this year it'll be a low-key day with my mom, showing her my favorite non-tourist places like the botanical gardens and flea markets. With everything that happened in my family at the beginning of year, followed by some incredibly hectic weeks of work, I kind of almost forgot about my birthday or what I'd even want! I know I'm lucky enough to be getting one thing on this list & hopefully a great day at the beach soon, but I also included a few *dream* things I want (like a new camera, a gorgeous yellow 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli bag and the not-pictured things like getting my dog to NYC & a trip to Paris). As you get older, your wish list gets considerably shorter & a lot more adult-like some new tupperware & dishes, someone to pay your cell phone bill for a month & a maid service for a day to thoroughly clean your apartment. Dream big, right? :)

Oh, and for good measure, if anyone can somehow get me THIS for my birthday we'll become the best of friends, and I'll return the favor with something equally amazing on yours. Happy almost weekend!

She Hit Pause Studios

One of my favorite things to do on the weekend includes hitting up the Brooklyn Flea, especially now that it's moved outside & Smorgasburg has started back up (if you go, Milk Truck, Dough & the place that makes vegan beet sliders are my favorites)! During one of my recent thrifting trips, I came across these beautiful, faded, summery photographs that looked bleached by the sun and full of places I'd like to go, from She Hit Pause Studios. The artist told me he pulls apart photographs and rubs them on a watercolor paper, giving them their vintage, faded effect. How cool is that? I've considered picking up a few for my apartment, and I'll be out thrifting this weekend to find some frames for other artwork that's been sitting around for ages so I wouldn't be surprised if one of these beauties finds its way home with me! Which one would you pick?
